  • Ages 8 – 15
  • Beginner – Advanced
  • Sail your own boat (Opti, Sunfish, FJ, other small dingys)
  • Club-owned boats available
  • Available to MSC members only
  • Must be able to swim 50 yard, wearing summer clothing & shoes, with & without PFD
  • Parents/guardians volunteer some time during the Sail Camp week

  • Limited overnight camping available for additional fee (must be accompanied by parent/adult sponsor)

Youth sailors have the opportunity to learn the basics or refine their sailing skills on Optimists, Sunfish, and perhaps other boat types as well. They learn safety and seamanship. They also develop responsibility as they conduct themselves on the water and on shore, working together with their peers and adult instructors. Our volunteer US Sailing Certified Instructors offer age and skill appropriate instruction using the US Sailing certification standards. (Refer to the Learn To Sail page for a list of skills.)

How parents can volunteer to help during Sail Camp week The smooth operation and low cost of this sailing camp opportunity depends upon the parent club members to volunteer in a variety of ways: instructor (certification necessary), assistant instructor, safety boat operator (license necessary), dock assistant for Opti sailors, rig & launch assistant, nurse/first aid, last day picnic coordinator, photographer. You will have the opportunity to indicate availability and preference on the application form.

Typical day at Sail Camp

  • Sailors check-in & rig boats
  • On shore instruction in each sailing group (chalk-talk)
  • Launch boats
  • On water skill practice
  • BYO Lunch break
  • Silly games on shore (time/weather depending)
  • Chalk-talk
  • Back on the water for sailing games/activities/race

Also included in each day is the fun factor. Sailing itself is great fun. Yet for many of our returning sailors, the reunion with friends and the on-shore socializing is a large part of what keeps them coming back.

Included in the cost of Sail Camp:

  • T-shirt
  • US Sailing textbook
  • US Sailing Certification book (aka the Red Book)
  • Pizza cruise on Nautical Nature (evening event)
  • Use of club boats
  • Organized, supervised group sailing instruction and activities each day
  • Potluck cook-out & bonfire (parent-accompanied, evening event)

Additional activities

Nautical Nature Pizza Cruise takes the camper sailors and instructors on a guided tour of Lake Arthur. Limited extra seats will be available for purchase for family members on the first day of camp. The tour guide presents a wealth of information of the many aspects of the lake. Past cruises allowed for sailors to observe a Bald Eagle, Osprey, Turkey Vultures, and much more. The Nautical Nature is a large pontoon with indoor seating. This takes place immediately after camp and lasts about 3 hours.

Last Day Picnic is held on the last day of camp, Friday. Parents are invited to our picnic and awards ceremony at 12:30/1pm on Friday. We'll recognize the kids' sailing achievements and enjoy great food. There will be a sign-up sheet for parents contributing to the picnic (watermelon, desserts, etc. Main food: hotdogs/hamburgers, eat will be provided by the club) The ceremony will take place at Watts Bay in the MTC building.

Overnight camping is available for an extra low-cost fee. Some instructors and their children stay near Davis Hollow throughout the week of Sail Camp. Dormitory style bunks and outdoor tent platforms are available, but space is limited. Sail Campers must be accompanied by parent/adult sponsor. Details will be made available after sail camp registration is complete.

How to apply for Youth Sail Camp

Please apply early, space is limited and fills quickly. Applications become available in the spring. Sign up for Basic Membership (if not already a MSC member) and complete Sail Camp Application. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registered sailors will be notified by email before May. At that time medical forms and Sail Camp fees will need to be sent in. If space is still available, applications will continue to be accepted until capacity is reached.
