Racing with the Moraine Sailing Club

Racing with the Moraine Sailing Club provides an opportunity for seasoned sailors to compete in a friendly yet challenging environment.  It also provides an atmosphere that encourages new racers to sharpen their sailing and racing skills. Many in MSC’s community of racers began as novice sailors and have become accomplished skippers, crew members, and race committee officials.  Our competitive racers range from eager intermediate to highly ranked sailors who travel to regattas and racing events throughout the country.  Although serious about racing, they are encouraging to new racers and very willing to share winning strategies.

The club conducts races throughout the summer and fall on Saturdays.  Although the schedule and format may vary from year to year, here is an idea of what to expect:

  • A captains meeting is held at 9:30 a.m. to discuss the race course, wind and weather conditions, safety, and to answer questions.

  • Races normally start at 10:30 a.m. and last until early afternoon.

  • Between 2 – 3 races per day, weather depending.

  • BYO lunch for after the races. This is an informal opportunity to talk with other racers about rigging boats and racing.

  • Primary starts include Flying Scot, Sunfish, and Open class.

  • Race results accumulate over the season with the top 5 finishers receiving awards at the annual banquet in November.

  • Only the skipper needs to be a Community Sailing or Racing member, crew are not required to be members.

Member registration for races is required and can be done on our calendar.

If you are not a member but have racing experience and you want to try racing with the Moraine Sailing Club, your first race day is free, then you may become a member. If you choose to remain a guest, there is a $25 per day race fee and your scores will not count toward a trophy. If you would like to race as a non-member or if you have questions contact race@morainesailingclub.org.

Moraine Sailing Club offers learn to race race instruction and race days for adults and children ready to take their sailing to the next level. This is a great sport for the whole family. Sessions will typically run from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Watts Bay. Club Sunfish are available for this program.  Experienced racers, instructors and the safety boat will be on the water with you. Our instructors will determine eligibility based upon experience, participation in our Learn to Sail program or Youth Sail Camp. A Learn to Race class will be held June 15, 2024.  Sign ups are required in advance on our Learn to Sail page.

The Sail for the Grail Regatta is hosted by Fleet 80 and will be held September 7 & 8, 2024.

The regatta is open to other Flying Scot sailors from the region.  It gives sailors an opportunity to enjoy a full weekend of sailing, camaraderie and meals together.  Some years it also serves as the Ohio District Championship, giving racers the best competition on the lake.  Go to our calendar to sign up.
